This Union I.D Tag was found along the Rappahannock River near Beverly Ford at the site where the 1st Battle of Rappahannock took place. Unreadable except for the last name research on my part has turned up 3 possibilities on whom it may belong.


John Schaeffer 29th NY Co.C....Frederick Schaeffer 73rd PA 2nd Lt.....Henry Schaeffer 88th PA Co. A. All were present during the 1st Battle of Rappahannock Station August 22 -25 1862.


The 73rd PA was also in the area of Beverly Fords April 14-15 1863 (note same location as 1st Battle of Rappahannock Station)

This pin was excavated in a Union Camp in Fauquier Co, VA.
However; insignia has been soldier modified possibly to wear on a kepi. Missing leg holding arrows, this is still a beautiful piece.
